No, no, it's pretty much whatever I want short of child pornography.

 Re: Why the hostility?
Also, all the new members are all due to the recent publicity CC got from like GI and such, so i mean you have to expect to have this kind of thing happen. Stupid members will come, and hopefully stupid members will go. Unfortunately, some of them think they are welcome and stay despite all the flaming they are receiving, and they are still unaware that theyd be better off just leaving the forum.

 Re: Why the hostility?
Grif should be a forum moderator, he's everywhere and has made a post every day since he joined, in comparison to the amount of posts he has made so far anyway. Not to say Saltydog is a bad moderator, but the last time he made a post was May 18, and hasn't done anything so far, Skiv is a different story, he's been doing good so far. (unless Salty has something happening on his end, or if he's was told to do something else)

 Re: Why the hostility?
Everyone is hostile here because there are so many idiots. I've been lurking for almost two years, I've seen the amount of idiots on this forum. There is perfect reason for those who aren't smart enough to use the search button. (My self included, retarded topic a couple of days ago). I personally think mods are too lenient, a great example is the piracy thread. That thing should have been locked and deleted, but the mods let it rage on, and as a result two people were banned, I don't know if it was permanently, but they were banned none the less.

 Re: Why the hostility?
I'm only hostile to idiots, and sometimes I'm nice to idiots in an attempt to make them stop being idiots, but to be honest? I'm hostile because it's more fun than being nice.
It's like playing Fable, except instead of villagers, you have newbies, and you don't grow horns when you beat them up.
EDIT: I also admit to being a lazy ♥♥♥♥ and not reading through the topic, and now that I've read just one page of it, I already feel redundant.

So you just want to scare away people who just don't know there is such thing as search function? Way to go... @ metal chao So on this forum you are talking about you made changes so forum is moderated by moderators and not users and that didn't work? Maybe you were understaffed? Otherwise I don't see what could go wrong. Moderator who can delete threads, ban users and do all kinds of stuff vs. user who can do one thing - flame Hmm.... tough choice isn't it? We were overstaffed. We had more staff members than we could ever logically need and half of them never had to do any work. Look, I know this is hard for you to accept because I went through the exact same thing. I doubt I will ever convert you to my point of view because nobody ever converted me until I realised this myself. I would love it if I had been right all along and this system was not the best way, but it is. You'll just have to accept it :/

Shard wrote: In mod releases an average post is: "OMG UR M0D IS S00 C0000000l!!111one" and "War dosed teh m0ded go?????????? As added bonus forum will be much cleaner place. Mind wrote: Unfortunately, some of them think they are welcome and stay despite all the flaming they are receiving, and they are still unaware that theyd be better off just leaving the forum. Wait a minute. You just said that people who despite begin flamed heavly stay on forum are stupid right? So why do you expect them to take a hint, to do something smart/intelligent? This is why such cases should be taken care of by moderators, because they have power to ban unwanted people, they don't care if someone takes hint or whatever, they just do it without unecessary flaming. Seraph wrote: Then somewhere down the line you have people generally hating the moderators, which leads to yet more flaming. If someone has any problem with mod's decision they should inform so via PM and add reasonable arguments if they fail to deliver such and still want to argue then I think this qualifies as trolling and I assume that we all here agree that we don't want trolls on forum. Quite simple. Shard wrote: Grif should be a forum moderator, he's everywhere and has made a post every day since he joined, in comparison to the amount of posts he has made so far anyway. This may be a suprise given my recent clash with him in this thread but I agree. We need more mods, mods who do their job (I'm not pointing at anyone here simply because I don't keep track of what each mod does ). I had conversation with Grif and it didn't ended with trolling. If he wants he can be polite and reasonable person. 3 solid wrote: I'm hostile because it's more fun than being nice. And such people are plague on this forum, they pay no heed to what they do because mods simply allow them to do what they want.

 Re: Why the hostility?
Can I take the liberty of being slightly off topic to ask people to please abuse the report button - I'm fine dealing with reports and if enough people make the effort on the forums to report so called "bad" posts and bug me on IRC I can get a better feel of how this forum needs to be moderated.

 Re: Why the hostility?
I agree with most of the people in this topic. At least, I think I'm agreeing with some people. The people who refuse to listen to the nice advice at the beginning have to be talked to in a way so that they will actually listen. For example, sin2051 posted earlier without reading the rest of the topic. I sent him a PM suggesting that he should change his post. He didn't do anything. Then people told him, in a bit harsher words, about his mistake.
When I first joined, I still though internet memes like longcat and shoop were funny and that the rest of the internet though the same way. I posted in a few topics and found out that the forum hates memes. I was embarrassed and stopped posting for a while. Then I started looking at other people's posts and saw how they typed. Now, I'm not exactly the best member and probably nobody knows me, but I'm not spewing memes all over the place.

Quote: He didn't do anything. Or maybe he checked his inbox later? Also in such case you should do what Seraph said, report it. Message from mod will have much better impact than from user who just can't do a damn.

 Re: Why the hostility?
I used to be janekk. There is no point arguing with him because there is no way to make him see he is wrong. The only way you will change his opinion is put him into a situation where he realises himself that he is wrong. Nothing else will show him. It is the only way I was able to realise that my moral code, although admirable, didn't match up with real life.
I still believe that it would be wonderful if a forum where everyone was nice to each other worked properly, but I'm no longer naieve enough to think I can force it to happen.

 Re: Why the hostility?
I frequently compare Datarealms to a DMZ. I'm just glad I'm one of the people with guns.
Seriously, some people say that a few DR users are pricks, but if people are going to come in and act stupid without using what small amount of gray matter they can spare without forgetting how to breathe, then they deserve to be reproved. More recently, reproves have been more like people half-answering a question and then saying "use the search button", followed up by six irrelevant posts and ending with a moderator locking the thread rather than sixteen pages of "OMGNOOBGTFO" before ending with a moderator locking the thread.
I've seen forums where the staff is far too tolerant to idiots, even when they weren't just a year or two ago, and have now melted down to a base comprised of 20% veterans who have been be able to bear the influx of newbs, 10% newbs with half a brain who can get along with everyone already on there, and 70% morons who post topics asking about how to post a topic.
It's better this way, and frankly, it isn't very hostile. Not like you can't post a thread without getting flamed- there's usually a reason, and never a minor one like misspelling one word.

(unless Salty has something happening on his end, or if he's was told to do something else) Number of posts =/= quality of posts A good moderator does NOT post, but rather reads all of the posts INSTEAD OF TALKING. Notice 80% of the time, grif can't be bothered to read my posts. in fact, most people can. that should honestly be a test of 'can this person moderate'. they must read one of shook's horridly long mod intro's, and read at least 10 of my posts, in there entirety. preferably the longer ones. If they can do that, they deserve to be a moderator, because they can actually do there job which requires reading EVERYTHING that was said, in order to pass judgment. As for this forum's hostility, you have to think, 80% of you are teenagers still in school, and most of us are computer nerds who probably got beat up at school. That hostility is passed on to the forums, and is compounded by 2 things 1) everyone else is being hostile and it becomes a male/male pissing contest of testosterone and who's the baddest of the bad, and 2) its a game about blowing ♥♥♥♥ up, with blood and fire everywhere, of course people are going to get aggressive. If we can get past the "Oh i'm a tough guy, I'm tough as nails, watch me run screaming kicking everyone I meet in the balls and deal with whatever they give me" attitude, AKA macho bull♥♥♥♥, and take the game as the light-hearted, retro, Saturday morning cartoon that it is, AND we stop getting idiots who can't use the search function, and everyone here will be nice. but that's not going to happen because everyone has been an insecure, beaten on, picked on nerd, and will always feel the need to look like more than what they are. Now can we please just end this thread, its pointless.
