A TED talk about filter bubbles.

So, what do we think of these?
Also, we should compare the first page of Google results we get for some search terms.

It's an interesting theory. Hopefully we'll have the option of turning it off.

Yeah, it is somewhat concerning.
In that first part, where he talks about facebook filtering out his more republican friends, doesn't that indicate pretty clearly that the overall effects of such filters just contributes to polarization of people's perspectives? I don't mean specifically politics, but really any factor that the filters perceive about you and filter out the opposite of.

On the other hand, I've already gotten used to just Googling "weather" and boom four day forecast for my zip code, with links to other weather-related websites' pages for the weather at my zip code.

While I'm sure most people had noticed these filterings to some extent, the video does show uses of it that many people would have otherwise been unaware of, [For instance, I don't use facebook and wouldn't have known that it had any such filters without the video] and directly talks about the subject itself, as opposed to "Oh, Google does that, now? Huh. Well anyways, are boa constrictors venomous?"

He raises a good point with being exposed to opposing views.
I actually found out about this video from Normal Bob Smith, creator of Dress Me Up Jesus. So, a fundamentalist is not likely to want to see that site.

On Facebook, it's possible to get your new feed to show all friends. It also displays who is blocked from the feed.
