Yeah, but there are ways to do that not involving wasteful spending. I guess I got my mom a Christmas present of sorts, in that I paid her phone/internet bill, but that was more out of necessity.

Buying people things that they want and will use is hardly a waste of money, just be smart when you are buying things
Feel free to celebrate Christmas in your own way but don't then try and say that it is superior to how anyone else does it, the idea that gift giving is an inherently terrible thing to do is absolutely ridiculous

I'm not saying it's superior not to give gifts, I'm saying that gifts costs money, and if given the choice between gifts and rent/electricity/what have you, I'd pick the latter.
