I have to say, for some insane reason, am I the only person on here who doesn't oppose the death penalty?
Or at least in my country am I the only person who wouldn't oppose the introduction of a death penalty? It would have to be regulated quite well and I'm no politician, but life sentences or large sentences sometimes seem to be pointless
Just my current opinion

No.

I'd just take everyone's money and pay off our debts. Then I'd remove all laws and make it survival of the fittest. Then work my way from there into making it fair.

In all honesty I'd probably just bang my head against the wall, since partisanship stops me from getting anything done and makes my life twenty times as difficult.

No.

I too support the idea of a death penalty.

The death penalty is good if you're sure they did it, especially since prisons aren't exactly infinite in capacity.

I personally regard the death penalty as a lesser punishment than a proper life sentence. Having years to think about what you did and could have done, all alone in your cell, beats dying for me. Also, daily torture.

I do however believe the death penalty is a good idea, out would be merciful as a punishment for the clinically insane, who were in one way or the other boot fully responsible for their crimes, but who are too dangerous for civilization.

I don't think death penalty is good.
I mean, it depends, but I don't think killing someone who killed solves the problem.

I only think the death penalty is OK in EXTREME cases where rehabilitation isn't an option.

I don't think it's ever ok to kill people.

The big ideas behind the justice system is to put penalties in place for criminals, to discourage the act from happening in the first place, as well as to protect the public from violent criminals. In some cases you can also rehabilitate the criminals.

However, to me it seems unfair to say to the victim that the culprit will only be put in jail, and possibly released, if they kill you.
Death is much more discouraging.

As far as the life sentence is concerned, you have to remember a couple things. It isn't free to provide medical care to prisoners, or for that matter to feed, clean, rehabilitate, protect, and confine them. Plus they take up a lot of space.

Is their life worth the resources they consume? And would the resources be better spent on law-abiding citizens?

Of course, the legal process for putting someone to death is often held up in so much bull♥♥♥♥ that it costs more than just putting them in jail for life.
Additionally, many murders/crimes of violence are made either under the influence or during heightened emotional states (eg being really really pissed off) when a person isn't thinking about consequences, their actions, or really anything besides stabbing a ♥♥♥♥. An otherwise perfectly healthy, normal, and well adjusted person can be put away for life or put to death because of a few extremely regrettable seconds.
Jussayin.

Of course in cases like the crazy ass guy who shot up the theater during the Dark Knight premier, he clearly wasn't caught up in any heat of the moment, and should face the full fury of the judicial system.

Even if the criminal is the worst person on earth, it's still a human being and has human rights. Even though if the criminal violated them.

In my opinion jails aren't working the way they should. They should make the prisoners productive, like what FoiL said:

As well as employ all criminals on a sort of forced labor. I mean, they're in for breaking the law and jails aren't hotels. They're supposed to hate being where they are.

In that way they are actually paying for what they did.

Eh, if you knowingly, right-mindedly, and willingly remove another person's right to life, then you no longer deserve your own imo.
That only covers unrepentant psychopath murderers really, but honestly they think killing people for no real reason is perfectly OK, I don't think we want them hanging around in society anyway.

Seriously, unless put to work or death, what is the point of jail? You sit in a cell for the rest of your life, play some B-ball, and get raped occasionally. Why are we spending billions of dollars on these people??

I'd be more concerned with, say the hundreds of billions spent on missiles.
