Well, it's the quickest and easiest way to do it, it's all the drivers in an easy to get package.

And there is no reason to update this notebook, it's like 4 or 5 years old and it's a miracle that it's still alive.

Dude, OS's COME with drivers. They have everything you need to run it (even if shittily) until you can run Windows Update and/or check the manufacturer's website for proper ones.
It won't be doing any top-level performance, but your computer will run perfectly fine.

The only drivers you should be concerned with are graphics drivers. Windows 7 will work even without those.

jk ofc. I don't really hate Windows 8, although I'd prefer if they didn't try to smash two different user interfaces together in such an ugly fashion.

Meh, if I got used to it I'd have no problems, but I've got enough stuff to learn without a completely different OS to slow me down.
