Post RtD -- Civil Steam -- Postponed until further notice.
While in Honduras, I had time to think about doing nothing, and as doing nothing usually consists of me being here among other things, I thought about how well you guys were doing. I thought to myself "Do you know what the forum needs? Another RtD." So I set out to create an RtD that pitted the Forum against itself.

The RtD rules are the same, but I'll use a nine sided dice. Nines are ALWAYS overshoots, like in many normal RtDs, but ones are extreme undershoots. By Undershoot, I mean something like this happening:

> Hit Johnny B. Goode in the face.

When rolling a six (which in this RtD will be an average success):

You punch Johnny in the face, breaking his nose.

When rolling a one (in this case an extreme undershoot):

You completely miss Johnny's face, throwing your balance off so much that as you fall your foot breaks Johnny's nose in the manner seen in a kung-fu movie.

Now for something completely different


Code:
After what many called the Rapture, the world started to rebuild, but things were different. The ground was toxic, clean water was hard to find, and even the air was dangerous. When democracy collapsed, humanity discovered what government had hidden: a gas that reacted against physics. This gas, which we shall call "unobtanioxide," lost mass as it became denser and as force was put unto it. It was the perfect solution for a problem that hadn't yet risen, a double entendre to be realized in coming years.

Soon after humanity started reconstructing itself, it realized that sickness was the norm. People were not expected to live longer then ten years (an obvious problem limiting any further generations from developing, as you may observe). People needed to find air that was clean, and that air happened to be above 5.000 feet. So they took to the skies. Balloons, dirigibles, planes, helicopters; the air was full of machines. When wars broke out, it would be the things balloons and blimps that went down first, and it was they who housed the people, and it was they who carried the fuel for everything else.

This was when unobtanioxide was put to use. It was easy to make since the chemicals needed were just below the clean-air line, and it let blimps sheath themselves in iron. Wars were now fought with less damage to the innocent, since now it was a bit harder to destroy.


If you just said tl;dr, then that is okay. The story just says that life is lived in the air and that blimps can hold more than normal physics allows.

"So, what does this all mean? I have a backstory, but where does the RtD come into play?" You may ask yourself.

Well. A civil war has broken out between the United Colonies of Humanity, or UCH. The two sides take their names from the well taught American Civil War. The Confederates and the Union are fighting once again. The two major flagships, the CSS Atlas - taking after the famous CSS Virginia, and the USS Sol - taking after the famous USS Monitor.

You will be forced to pick a side based not on their beliefs (since I have not told you what they believe), but on the ships' strengths and flaws.

There are eight players: three fighters and one ship captain per side. Players other than the captain will die quickly, and will use fighters. There are different kinds of fighters, all of which have different traits. You will choose a kind of fighter for you ship. Traits include Speed (in knots), Ammo Limit (in Rounds), Health (in H), Crew Members, and guns (# of Heavy, Light, or Medium - you can only pick one of these). You can decide armor and such, and you can pick different kinds of Ammo that you want, I wont care to name ammo because I'm not expecting you to pick something too outlandish.

Kinds of Fighters:

  • Hot Air Balloon -- very fast, since they almost always have a jet engine, it's balloon is very stable, and can resist multiple holes.
    - Holds 5 Rounds with heavy guns, 30 Rounds with medium guns, and 100 Rounds with light guns.
    - Holds 1 heavy gun, 1 medium gun, or 2 light gun
    - 100 Knots top speed (excluding extra abilities.)
    - No extra crew.
    - Up to 50 H
  • Dirigible -- Slow, strong, and large.
    - Holds 20 Rounds with heavy guns, 100 Rounds with medium guns, and infinite Rounds with light guns.
    - Holds 2 heavy gun (1 if energy), 4 medium gun (2 if energy), or 8 light gun
    - 50 Knots top speed (excluding extra abilities.)
    - No less than three crew members, no more than six.
    - Up to 100 H
  • Plane -- Cannot stop moving, extremely fast, very weak.
    - 50 Rounds with medium guns, and infinite Rounds with light guns.
    - Holds no heavy gun, 2 medium gun, or 4 light gun
    - 200 Knots top speed
    - No more than three crew.
    - Up to 20 H -- 10 H Weakspot
  • Helicopter -- Not fast nor strong, can only have one kind of engine -- propeller, but can take a beating elsewhere and can carry a lot.
    - Holds 10 Rounds with heavy guns, 30 Rounds with medium guns, and 100 Rounds with light guns.
    - Holds 1 heavy gun, 2 medium gun, or 4 light gun
    - 80 Knots top speed (excluding extra abilities.)
    - No more than two crew members
    - Up to 40 H

On Energy Weapons:
Energy weapons are okay, but can only be used on a dirigible. A dirigible with an energy weapon has to have a generator, which is explosive, and an extra crew member for this generator. All energy weapons are heavy or medium, no matter what. All energy weapons have to be crude, by crude I mean that it can't be too, well, unrealistic.

On Crew Members:
Having more crew members is both good and bad. More crew members means that you can do more things at once, but it also means that you have more things that can be destroyed. If you have one crew member who shoots a gun, then you can both shoot and do something else, if that crew member dies, then you cannot do more than one thing at once. More crew members means more people to fill in for dead crew.

On Weakspots:
Weakspots are where things are weak and take double damage. All Balloons are weakspots. Planes and Helis have a designated weakspots: the Helicopter blade and the Airplane wings. Every engine is a weakspot, but losing an engine may not destroy a ship if it has more or is a balloon.

On Ammo:
If you run out of ammo, you take one turn to go back to base and refill on ammo. You can specify if you want special kinds of ammo.

On Speed:
Just assume that every turn is in roughly ten minutes, a ship moving one knot will move 1/6 of a nautical mile (also called a knot) every turn, more will be added on this subject. Speed will come into play when dodging shots, getting places, and doing basic stuff.

On Captains:
There needs to be two people who want to be captains. These people will tell me how much to rotate the ship (by degrees, I will have a map when enough people join.). They will signal which guns to fire. They have no limit on things they can do at once as they have practically unlimited crew members, but like everybody, they can't do the same thing twice in one turn (Fire all guns, reload, fire all guns...).

On Movement:
Tell me how far you want to move and in what direction. Rotation wont come into play, and you don't need to give me exact coordinates or distances, just "North by Northwest for a couple knots (nautical miles in this case)." Movement will always be successful unless an engine is destroyed.

Other Weapons
You may want to use bombs. Well, you can. They will be counted as ammo, allowing you to have both a gun and bombs. Just note that bombs will take up room.

Play Hammerfall? Great game. Want melee weapons? Sure. They will not use ammo and will follow the weapons class rules. You can have a large Hammer or multiple light chains with spikes if it fits the aircraft's criteria.

CSS Atlas Led by the fearless Anthony Lovegale.

This is a behemoth of an airship. It's absolutely massive compared to anything else thought up. It's mind numbingly slow and spans hundreds of meters. It's a single balloon dirigible, with a large boxy hull underneath. It's extremely stable, and can not capsize. Like most confederate things, it is well overbuilt, and very strong. The balloon is nearly totally encased in the hull, making it a hard target to hit, the top, front and back the only place where it is visible.

Stats:
~ 200 meters long
~ Two medium jets - rear
~ Two large props - front
~ 20 cannons - regular - port side
~ 20 cannons - regular - starboard side
~ Two large artillery, bow mounted.
Top Speed: 30 knots
Top Turning Speed (one full turn): 3 turns
Health: 1000 H
Ammo: Regular unless specified otherwise.

Fighter Traits:
All fighters can hold 10 Rounds (Regardless of guns) more and have 30 H more.


USS Sol Who's captain is the well known Julliet Windfall.
This ship is tiny compared to the Atlas. But what it loses in guns and health it makes up for in Speed and damage. It's aerodynamic shape lets it turn on a dime. The Union is well funded and has much better ammo. It's multiple sphere balloon design means that it can capsize, but losing one balloon isn't the end of the world.

Stats:
~ 90 meters long
~ One large jet - rear
~ Two medium jets - rear
~ One large prop - Port side
~ One large prop - Starboard side
~ 20 massive machineguns, front
~ 5 large artillery, bow mounted.
Top Speed: 60 knots
Top Turning Speed (one full turn): 1 turn
Health: 650 H
Ammo: All regular nonexplosive rounds are upgraded to armor piercing. All rounds do 1.5X damage.

Fighter Traits:
All fighters are 20 knots faster, along with the Ammo upgrade.


You will die quickly. This RtD wont last very long, just until one team wins.

Nice choice. I just hope I didn't put too much power on Atlas.

You can put that down as your ship, but I don't think captains will need to.
