Can I put the stairs to a room that is still unexplored? And do I have to return to the room to do it?

You have to do it to an explored room, and you won't need to go back because you should have done it when you actually got the event, so it also has to be an explored room as of when you got the event (last turn).

Sadly there aren't enough rooms to make it a useful choice.

Events
Miggles/Darrin "Flash" Williams moves up and finds the Charred Room (D,0), where he finds an Omen.
Spirit Board: A board with letters and numbers to call the dead.
Before you move during your turn, you can look at the top tile of the room stack.
If you use the Spirit Board after the haunt has been revealed, the traitor can move any number of monsters 1 space closer to you. (If you are the traitor, you don't have to move those monsters.) If there is no traitor, all monsters move 1 space closer to you.
For the forum adaptation, you can ask for a peek at an unrevealed tile on a particular floor, so for instance, you would ask to see a tile for the Basement and I would PM the tile's identity to you, but not location.
Haunt roll (3 Omens in play): 6d3-6: 1,3,1,2,3,2 (-6); 6 No haunt

Asklar/Prof. Longfellow walks back through the rooms he's visited and enters the door in front of him, finding the Abandoned Room (D,4) (no longer abandoned, seems like) and finds an Omen:
Ring: A battered ring with an incomprehensible inscription.
If you attack an opponent that has a Sanity trait, you can attack with Sanity instead of Might. (Your opponent defends with Sanity and damage is mental instead of physical.)
Haunt roll (4 Omens in play): 6d3-6: 2,3,2,3,3,2 (-6); 9 No haunt.

caekdaemon/Vivan Lopez attempts to move further through the Catacombs but must steel herself, or her Sanity might not hold out.
Sanity roll: 5d3-5: 1,3,1,2,3 (-5); 5
The darkness of the room combined with the presence of all the dead in the walls causes Vivian to shudder and stop, unable to continue.

Amazigh/Jenny LeClerc runs over to where Vivian disappeared down the coal chute and joins her in the basement, landing in the Basement Landing (Basement C,3)



Important Bits
Attic: When exiting, you must attempt a speed roll of 3+. If you fail, lose 1 might (but continue moving).
Catacombs: You can attempt a Sanity roll of 6+ to cross. If you fail, you stop moving.

Events
Miggles/Darrin "Flash" Williams decides to gtfo from the crazy bloody and charred rooms and steps into the Bedroom (D,2), which has to be safe. Unfortunately, it isn't, an Event happens.
Mists from the Walls: Mists pour out from the walls. There are faces in the mist, human and ... inhuman.
Each explorer in the basement must attempt a Sanity roll.
caekdaemon/Vivan Lopez: 5d3-5: 1,3,1,3,1 (-5); 4
The faces are tricks of light and shadow. All is well.
Amazigh/Jenny LeClerc: 4d3-4: 3,1,3,2 (-4); 5
The faces are tricks of light and shadow. All is well.

Seems this batch of explorers is getting lucky so far.

Asklar/Prof. Longfellow moves upward and finds himself teetering over the edge of the Collapsed Room (D,3)!
Collapsed Room: You must attempt a Speed roll of 5+ to avoid falling. If you fail the roll, draw a basement tile and put it in play. You fall there and take 1 die of physical damage.
Speed roll: 5d3-5: 1,3,3,2,1 (-5); 5
Amazingly, Prof. Longfellow manages to catch himself before tipping over the edge.

caekdaemon/Vivan Lopez wanders back through the Dusty Hallway to find the Underground Lake (A,3), where an event happens:
Creepy Crawlies: A thousand bugs spill out on your skin, under your clothes, and in your hair.
You must attempt a Sanity roll: 5d3-5: 3,2,3,2,3 (-5); 8
You blink, and they're gone. Gain 1 Sanity.

Amazigh/Jenny LeClerc goes the exact opposite direction that Vivian is going (like usual) and finds herself choking in the Furnace Room, which clearly hasn't been cleaned out in 300 years of continuous use. However, in the ashes, she finds an Omen:
Medallion: A medallion inscribed with a pentagram.
You are immune to the effects of the Pentagram Chamber, Crypt, and Graveyard.
Haunt roll (5 Omens in play): 6d3-6: 3,1,3,2,2,2 (-6); 7 No haunt
Jenny continues coughing and takes 1 point of physical damage.
