You crack open your book and…

It’s… In French?

Flipping through the pages, they’re all in French.

The bell rings, signalling the beginning of Block 1.

Mr. Rauha: ”Alright, let’s get started! So, it looks like you’ve all already gotten a book, it’ll be the first book we’ll be using for the class. As you can see on the board, my name is Levi Rauha, just call me Mr. Rauha. First day of school so it won’t be too bad, we’re mostly just going to go over what the class’ll cover. Any questions so far?”
Male, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Grey, Skin: Light, Body: Muscular, Height: Very Tall

A girl in one of the central desks raises her hand.

Mr. Rauha: ”Yes?”
Male, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Grey, Skin: Light, Body: Muscular, Height: Very Tall

GreenEyes: ”Is this a French class?”
Female, Eyes: Green, Hair: Bob Cut/Black, Skin: Light, Body: Average, Height: Short

Mr. Rauha: ”No, this is Literature 1. I don’t think we even have French as a course for First Years.”
Male, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Grey, Skin: Light, Body: Muscular, Height: Very Tall

She raises her book up.

GreenEyes: ”My book is in French.”
Female, Eyes: Green, Hair: Bob Cut/Black, Skin: Light, Body: Average, Height: Short

Mr. Rauha: ”That’s… Odd. Must be a distribution mistake. Here, take another one.”
Male, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Grey, Skin: Light, Body: Muscular, Height: Very Tall

He takes another book from the pile at the front of the room, opening it and then instantly freezing.

You grab a book from the table and find a seat where you’re equally distant from everyone else, which happens to be in the back center of the room.

The bell rings, signalling the beginning of Block 1.

Ms. Gosic: ”So, it looks like you’ve all grabbed a book. They’re all useless. Put them back on the table.”
Female, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Long/Blonde, Skin: Light, Body: Thin, Height: Short

The students look around confused, some of them opening their books and looking even more confused.

"That make this a French class now?"

Hope this chap didn't plan on teaching from the textbook... Still, weird that the title's in English.
... They didn't put an English cover onto French pages, did they?

There’s a bit of a chatter while the teacher starts writing on the board.

Mr. Rauha: ”Take some time to write that down if you want. I was planning on doing a few quick readings from the book, but uh, guess we could start off with you guys writing a paragraph or two on a topic, see where the class is with writing.”
Male, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Grey, Skin: Light, Body: Muscular, Height: Very Tall

Topic
Arriving at the murder scene

Mr. Rauha: ”Have a few of you read your writing out loud if you’d like.”

You carefully check your book - the title and all writing on the cover is English. Opening it up, you see foreign words and quickly shut it closed with a squeak.

Wait, you’re pretty sure you skimmed through your book a minute or so before class started. Checking inside again, you see that everything is… French.

>Get to work.
"Under the blind sky sprawls my city - concrete poured into ranks of tenements and grey palaces of government buildings in flickering light. We work day and night because murder comes without a schedule, without a meaning.

The sirens are keening under the rain. We pull up in two cars. Kovacs in the cruiser, with the 30-round military iron strapped to the dashboard, and I with the autopsy bag, hunched by the metal slab in the gendarmerie van. We crawl out and don our rubber jackets. The sweat begins to pool deep beneath the rivulets of rain on our shoulders. An ugly job, done by rough detectives on the loneliest beat, hoping against hope as we peel into the night that we won't really be vital, that it'll just be some kind of sick joke, that some merciful force, some hand will drag back the clock on a kid's cooling body and make us unnecessary.

And I see them still, you know? Most of the faces. Mostly the women. Expressions variable. Race variable. Cut up across dirty floors. Or clutching the guts or lungs - done by poison.

The other officers are four deep at the steps to the home, looking at us for answers which we didn't know yet that we could never provide.

This night our object of study was divided in full, pieces arranged by awful symmetry in a pattern that confused our machine. (We have a partially intelligent camera that triangulates blood spatter and correlates it with the wounds, but it breaks on the worst cases.) Yeah? You're right. I do despise myself a little for going back again and again and again. Amen. You either choke back laughter or you cry. These sights will never leave my brain."

Alright Lance, enough about textbooks. Arriving at the murder scene. This is an easy assignment.

> New page. Start writing:

It's a red sedan, it could be - nope, the driver flew right past me. That was the last one there's been for a while now, most of the other kids are gone already. The receptionist's been eyeing us, too. He looks about ready to give us a piece of his mind. Can't go home until we're gone, I bet.

Turned around and watched as one of the others stood up and legged it. Not a bad thought, clouds are beginning to edge out the sun, and we'd best be home before the rain starts. Unless your name is Gene Kelly, I suppose. So, I stumbled to my feet and set off towards the vague direction of home.

The ice cream truck was in the usual spot, starting to pack up for the day. Mum would take me there every now and then. I always thanked her when she did, I knew she wasn't supposed to. Sometimes I'd beg. Maybe if she'd been able to come, I'd have gotten an ice lolly. Not on days like these, though. When I'd gotten home, usually Mum and Dad had gotten into a fight. They tried not do it when I was around, but usually Mum didn't look too good after. Sometimes she'd wear her high-necked jumper to cover the bruises.

The rainclouds had finally eclipsed the sun and begun to pour, but I'd made it. Opened the door to the stairwell just in time to hear a door above close. Shugging it off, I forced my aching knees up each step of the stairwell up to the second floor. I didn't have a key, but usually a knock or two was all it took. But, wait, was that our door? The door to our flat was wide open.

"Hello?"
No response, save for the blasting boombox of the downstairs neighbor and the rain. I peered inside, spotting Mum sprawled out on the couch.
"Mum?"
I rushed over. Her eyes were open.
"Mumma!"
Her neck is all red. Not breathing.
"Why? Did he do this? Why now? Why like this? There's no reason to. ♥♥♥♥."
There's a thud outside. Someone screams. I can hardly even see anymore. I run out to check anyway. It's definitel-

> Accidentally break the pencil tip.

> Stare at what I've written.

Can I really use this? Maybe I shouldn't have went with the first thing that came to mind. ♥♥♥♥.

> Write down the lists. Then, let's see. Arriving at the murder scene.

"So how much further is this place exactly?"
"We're almost there."

Joshua and I trudge through the forest, dry leaves crunching underfoot, the occasional snap of a branch breaking. Looking up, the sky is an endless expanse of blue with nary a cloud in sight. Very good weather for a camping trip, though I'll only be here to enjoy it for another day. Then, back to the cold grey of city.
"You said that like three miles ago."
"And this time I mean it."
"You said that like TWO miles ago."

I can't blame him, the terrain around here is rough. Hilly, filled with trees, miles from the campground. If we were hiking out here to make camp instead of just for the view and adventure, I would be complaining too. But he's a sucker for this poetic stuff, nature unspoiled and artistic vistas. There's plenty of grumbling about the journey, but the destination makes it all more than worth it.

"Look, right up this hill, right at the top and we're there."
"Oh thank god, it's almost over."
"Still got the walk back, champ."
"Don't remind me."

A hoodie AND two shirts was a bad idea for this walk, I don't care how chilly I was this morning. Exertion in cold weather sucks, you can start all bundled up and before you know it, you're all sweaty and removing layers to cool down, despite being able to see your breath on every exhale. Then you go back to being cold, but now you're cold AND sticky. Josh on the other hand, is looking fine with just a thick cardigan, abominable snowman that he is.

I speed up a bit to get to the top first, with Josh panting lightly behind me as he climbs the last, steepest section. As he climbs up, I survey the land, confirming that it's as I remembered it as a kid, unable to resist the grin spreading across my face. Joshua finally makes it, and walks up next to me quietly.
"Wow... you were right. You can see for miles up here, this is beautiful."
"Yup! Found this when I was a youth, nobody for miles around, just wild unspoiled wilderness."

We pass a few moments in silence before Joshua puts his arm around my waist, and I snuggle up close to him, resting both hands in my hoodie's pocket away from the cold air.
Slowly and carefully, making sure not to jostle him, I slide the knife out of its sheath inside the hoodie pocket.

> ...Let's not read that one aloud.

Alright Lance, enough about textbooks. Arriving at the murder scene. This is an easy assignment.

Turning to a new page, you start writing.

The tip of your pencil snaps after a heavy bout of writing. Looking at what you have on your paper, you have doubts about what you wrote.

Can I really use this? Maybe I shouldn't have went with the first thing that came to mind. ♥♥♥♥.

Mr. Rauha: ”So, who wants to read theirs?”
Male, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Grey, Skin: Light, Body: Muscular, Height: Very Tall

Rana Salient: ”Ooh! Mee!”
Female, Eyes: Pink, Hair: Light Pink, Skin: Light, Body: Lean, Height: Short

She stands up, notebook in hand.

Rana Salient: ” ‘Hello?’

My voice echoes throughout the building, alerting the old, rusted pipes and decaying particle boards to my presence.

An abandoned office on the outskirts of town, it’s a hot-topic among the middle schoolers. Ghosts, murderers, and suicidal students all find their home in the dilapidated structure.

‘Where are you?’

My friend is nowhere to be seen. Seconds ago she ran through the doorway, eager to explore and look for ‘hidden treasure’ while I hesitated at the streetside. Now, I cautiously step through the entrance, crushing the broken glass underfoot as I look to the left and right for any sign of the half-retarded eighth grader I came here with.

Foot by foot I investigate the ground level like a detective, searching for any sign of my friend. A scrap of clothing snagged on a sharp protrusion, a missing shoe, a dropped pendant, all the things you’d see in horror movies as the protagonist desperately searches for a friend or lover. For me - footsteps, listening for that occasional squeak of a well-worn shoe on wet tiled flooring.

I’m led up to the second floor, then the third, and then the fourth, following the faint sound of my friend’s shoes. A few hurried steps here, the squeak of a sudden halt and then another of quickly pushing off into a sprint.

My skin crawls as it hits me - she’s running away from something.

A burst of panic mixed with heroism overcomes me and I bolt, rushing down the halls, around corners, through broken walls, hoping to catch up, making myself catch up. After what feels like an eternity of running and half-jogging, I arrive in a room full of old cubicles. The squeak of shoes has stopped, now replaced with a strange sloshing sound. Slowly navigating the maze of cells, the slosh turns to a sickly wet tearing, over and over. Rounding a corner, my heart pounds like a drum when I see a hunched over figure halfway in a cubicle, a horrifying mixture of a circus clown’s attire and the build of a massive wolf, ripping away at something hidden in the office space. Blood drenches the dirty tiling, and a familiar, worn sneaker partially sticking out from the cubicle soaks in the red liquid.

I slowly step back, inches at a time, until the horror is out of view. Foot by foot, looking left and right as I desperately try to remember the way out. My shoe hits a stray pen on the floor, sending it rolling away until it clacks against a wall.

The sounds of the monster gorging itself on my friend stop.

Quiet, careful footsteps sound out, and I silently move into the closest cubicle and under the desk, hiding behind the remains of a broken rolling chair.

Pat.

Pat.

Pat.

I cover my face, trying to calm down and still my heart that was beating loud enough that I almost thought the monster could hear it.

I was dead. A horror story for middle schoolers to share. A meal for a nightmarish creature.

At the very least, I thought, I’ll die with my eyes open. Stare into the face of death and feel the fear pulsing through my veins, one last reminder of my existence.

The footsteps get closer and closer, and I uncover my hands, and nearly jump in surprise. Sitting in front of me is a white cat with long, floppy ears, and two demonic red eyes that stare into my soul. It speaks, a voice like child.

‘Will you make a wish?’ ”

GreenEyes: ” I flip the switch and the sirens blare, flashing red and blue lights. my foot guns the accelerator and the Charger obeys, rubber grips pushing asphalt back as fast as possible.

Rookie’s in shotgun, gripping on to the ceiling handle with white knuckles.

‘It’s only my first day, dammit. Why’re we getting called on this?’

‘We’re the closest ones. Gotta go by protocol, rookie.’

Suddenly veering off the right lane and into the exit ramp, Rookie swears as the Charger yanks hard around the turn, nearly losing its four-wheel contact.

A playground comes into view. Wood chips, slides, jungle gyms, swings, and a gathering of people at one edge. I gently brake, bringing the vehicle to a halt.

‘You comin’?’

‘I dunno man, I’m just not ready. All I’ve been trained for so far is handing out tickets, this ain’t my kinda deal.’

‘Well, keep the doors locked until I get back.’

I crack Rookie a smile before opening the door and stepping out. He swears again, turning off the engine and bringing the keys as he paces behind me in shorter, faster steps.

The scene is grim - black crows, everywhere. The ground, obstacles, swings, even the trashcans. Parents nearby are shielding their children’s eyes, yet stare on themselves.

‘Christ, look at all of ‘em.’

My foot hits the wood mulch, crunching as I walk closer, inspecting the area for any hint of a suspect. Footprints, dropped weapons, clothing left behind. And then I see it, partially buried in the wood chips. Slapping on some rubber gloves, I carefully dig out the item of interest - a square plastic wrapper, torn open on one side.

‘Saltine crackers.’

Rookie is pacing back and forth, unable to handle the feathered image painted in front of us.

‘We’ve got a murder on our hands.’ ”

… Let’s not read that one aloud.

Mr. Rauha: ”So, who wants to read theirs?”

You write your answer on the first page of your Red notebook.

Check Notebooks!

Ms. Gosic: ”Everyone done?”
Female, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Long/Blonde, Skin: Light, Body: Thin, Height: Short

A mix of nods, coughs, and sniffs.

The teacher begins writing the answer on the board and…

You got them all correct!

She begins writing some more information on the board.

Nouns: People, places, things
Verbs: It’s what you do
Adjective: Describes a noun
Adverb: Describes a verb, adjective, noun phrase, and a bunch of other things. It’s actually a bit nebulous.

Determiner/Article: Specifies definiteness - this, a(n)
Or clarifies the referent of the noun (what the noun refers to) - this, my, theirs, many, none

Preposition: POSITION - in, under, above, with
Time - before, after, during
or another complex form - of, for

Conjunction: Combines sentences/phrases - and, when

Ms. Gosic: ”So, those are the basic word classes of English as of… 2015. It may change in the future, so don’t get too comfortable. Write that down, make and label sentences if you want, talk about your boring lives, we had a weird thing on the first day of class and I’m not in much mood to go over anything else. Tomorrow we’ll go over some writing stuff that you probably covered in middle school because English courses don’t have much depth until you get to college.”
