"Well... Initially, for our research with UC. The details are under an NDA, but we wanted to know how to interface with spirits at range.

Secondly, Bezel has an interest in spirit magic. I couldn't tell you why, but I feel it's personal. I respect her a lot, and if she thinks a spirit specialist is the man we need, then I'll follow."

"Well... mostly for work. Witch cores are the most likely culprit for figuring a solution for our big project, but you never know where some esoteric magic style might come in useful. Spirits might end up being a good transfer medium for large amounts of energy, or something like that.
I'm a bit curious on spirits in general, and now the spirit body link since that sort of directly relates to alchemy. Bezel wanted to go too, but I didn't ask why.
Oh, actually, I bet it's to ask about eastern style constructs. They tend to use a central spirit that just does whatever the construct needs, rather than discrete components."

Claire: "How does the spirit-body connection directly relate to alchemy? It looks like a specialized pinch with an unequal ratio of world mass to alternate-world, uh, 'mass'."

"I'm no expert, but - creating a pinch large enough to send matter through falls into the realm of opening portals. From what I understand, the lupus spirit mages are the best at that, so there must be some sort of link."

"Well, maybe not specifically the SBC, but the spirit in general definitely is. With normal magic you just make a tiny tiny pinch that lets through just enough to cause magic. With Alchemy, you're using your spirit to wrench a BIG hole open, and then throwing matter into and back out of the Other.
So, spirit stuff in general is of use to me. And since I figure the SBC manages the constant pinch between the worlds that we springboard off to make magic pinches, alchemy probably is similar."

Claire: "What do you plan to do with alchemy one you figure it out?"

"Help the world, somehow. There's a lot I could do with being able to transmute things.
Hell, if Byron's right about the whole Arctic Queen thing, then we might need the more... explode-y kind of Alchemy, too."

"This is going to sound naive, but... I wanted to make the world a better place. As in, the alchemists of old are the ones who defeated the leviathans, who founded nations and made civilization able to survive the many catastrophes it met.

I, some times I wanted to be like that. Even if it's just something dumb like inventing a way to convert sand into carrots, as long as it helps people out I'll be happy. I'm not much of a mage otherwise, so... It felt like something I could try and be good at.

I want to leave something behind I can be proud of."

Claire: "Maybe naive, but at least it's a benevolent goal. The Daeli wanted to do the same thing, but they ended up a little corrupt. Just make sure once you make it to the top, you remember why you climbed up in the first place."

"Wise words. Though, I doubt I'll ever reach the very top. Just climbing a few steps is more than enough for me.

What about you? What moves you, Claire?"

Claire: "Knowledge itself, I guess. Is there a reason why witches are as complicated as they are? Why do they have such massive cores? Why do the oldest ones resemble humans? Why does the first witch look like the Caelum Devil?

There must be some reason behind all of this. I just want to learn what it is."

"Heh. I can see the allure in that, too.

I'm sure you'll get to the root of the problem sooner or later. I've seen you work, and you're one of the most dilligent and clever researchers I know."

Claire: "Eeee!"

Claire squirms from the contact, feeling the top of her head afterwards while giving you an exaggerated frown.

Her expression slowly resets as her gaze returns to the book.

Claire: "I don't know, I feel like I'm lacking in, some sort of ability. Research is difficult when you can barely interact with your subjects, when they're alive and when they're dead.

I guess Aldente felt the same way, but still tried."

"My subjects are long dead. I have to exhume them first, and then decrypt their secrets from whatever dead languages or flowery prose they were written in. And that's if I'm lucky enough to have them written down.
But, yeah, at least I get to hold them. It's, tough, to strike out and find new knowledge. But, we persevere, and that's how we advance."

"Plus, I'm not sure we're so alike. Aldente's first response to difficulties was to kidnap, torture and kill the targets of her study. In our case... Think of Audacity. Think of our parley yesterday.

I think we can choose to be better than she was."
