Bezel: "Yeeeaah.

I think all the ones we encounter in the wild are game variants. Their breeding is limited to uncontested territory with no human presence, so for the most part they aren't a menace to society.

The weaponized ones don't breed at all, just roam around and kill everything on sight. Bigger and stronger, too.

Supposedly you can just flip a switch on game variants to turn them into weapons, but no going back.

Best to just put this one out of its misery, don't wanna trigger a problematic function by accident."

Where do you learn all this stuff anyway?"

Bezel: "The Academy, for the dragon stuff anyways. Information on constructs incidentally means information on cores, and core beasts."

She pushes the cart over to a space with various machinery, and with nothing better to do at the moment, watch her work.

Cracking open the exterior shell in several places, she connects several cables to drain mana out of the core, to prevent the beast inside from doing anything dangerous while she cracks it open and starts poking around inside.

Bezel: "So, dragons were made by taking kinetic drakes and making them bigger, angrier, and giving them wings, right? Did you know the manticores in Siana were bred to be a downgrade from their predecessor?"

What the hell were the originals like? And I guess where?"

Bezel: "They were smaller and physically weaker, but not by much. There're a lot of stories about them in the early years of the Corruption. Intelligent as people, living in primitive societies. Most of them were kinetic and dark mages, the more powerful ones could teleport.

They had settlements all over the place, but the Daeli wiped them out, took a few prisoners, and bred them into the manticores we know of.

There's apparently a surviving tribe in Kalas, but it might be a different type of creature. There's another dark magic beast in Kalas - at the time it was discovered, people called it a Lesser Manticore, even if the only thing they have in common is dark magic.

Not sure if the tribe in Kalas is Manticores, or Lesser Manticores.

A lot of dark-magic constructs use ancient stockpiles from the manticore genocide, and those stockpiles still exist today. Crazy to imagine how many there were, and how many died."

Yeah. Genocide is an accurate word."

She slowly cracks open the core, two halves splitting apart while she takes care to not damage any of the flexible vein-like wires connecting components together. Sifting around inside, she eventually disconnects something and pulls it out for you to see - a translucent glass-like rod with rounded ends and a slight blue tint, roughly as long as a finger and an inch in diameter.

Bezel: "Does this look familiar at all?"

Nothing really jumps to mind.

Was thinking it'd be interesting if it looked the same as the thing your Employer showed you. Guess not."

The one I saw was more like a comma or a walnut with a tail.
Different color too, not sure how much that matters."

Bezel: "Nothing shaped like that in here.

At least we don't have to worry about core beasts actually being-"

She pauses for a moment.

Bezel: "People.

These ones, anyways.

Witch memory stones, looked like that. How you described. Red, right?"

Searching through the core, she extracts two large components, one a yellow head-sized chunk of crystal, and one much smaller, a murky green sphere the size of an eyeball.

Bezel: "This little one here is the focus. A special one, creates artifacts that withstand the mana output of a dragon.

The bigger one is a condenser. Kind of like a temporary mana stone. Not good for long term storage since it leaks over time, but it can hold a lot more mana. Pretty crazy amounts.

Both of these parts would cost a fortune back in Vellum."

"Makes you think if that wasn't part of the Daeli's whole idea with breeding these. Hunting targets, weapons of mass destruction, AND free sources of construct components.

I wonder if it'd be possible to make a core grow those parts on its own without needing the rest of the dragon."
