Cute little things about knee high, all black and white, waddle around upright like a perched owl.
Not feathery like normal birds though, they looked almost slick. They're swimmers though I think, so maybe they're waterproof feathers."

The details still need a bit of research, but it essentially allows you to send out a very long-ranged... tendril? Or at least a tendril analogue, that pipes in visual data from a location. We're not exactly sure HOW it perceives things - it works in complete darkness, so it can't just be detecting light.
Either way, it converts that into a stream of data that can be processed into a picture. I have a specialized telepathic structure that lets me see it in real time, but otherwise you have to use a TI-comp and a camera to take snapshots.
It seems mostly undetectable by normal techniques, but some witches seemed able to see it. We're thinking it uses space compression in some way, which is also why it can't see in or out of cores."
