You flip through the unknown book.

The written characters have a sort of scratch-like aesthetic, lot of symbols that use straight lines and geometric shapes, very few curves. Looks like old lupus writing, you're not sure what language it is though.

One last book! And you toss it into a leather messenger bag.

Walking back into your room, you pull out some nicer clothes from your closet - a long sleeved white button-down, some black dress pants, nice shoes, and a tie. Might be chilly later, so you grab a sweater, too.

After throwing some paper and pencils into your bag in case you need to write something down, you sling it over your shoulder and leave the house, locking the door and putting your key-on-a-lanyard around your neck.

A quick walk across the street takes you to Iiri's house, which looks more or less like yours. Knocking on the door, you hear a "Coming!", and it opens up a few seconds later.

Iiri is in the doorway, wearing a green short-sleeved shirt and white shorts. It goes well with her faded tan fur, a color that reminds you of light beach sand.

While chirop naturally look like they have weird sleeves around their arms due to their folded wings, Iiri's arms look almost skeletal. She came from a radical Externalist state far north, where having unique personal strengths like flight or magic were considered selfish and rebellious, so magic was more or less nonexistant, and chirop had their wings cut off at birth.

Iiri: "Morning Ralph. Looking sharp!"

[What do you say?]

Iiri: "Uh, sure! Lemme get ready, come in."

You enter the house and she closes the door, then quickly rushing off into a bedroom.

The house looks more or less the same as yours on the inside as well, with the coffee table in the same place, just different style. On it is one of the history reports you wrote for her in exchange for the food she dropped off for you.

(Shouting through the walls)

Iiri: "Where is the interview exactly?"

Iiri: "Oh, Darson!"

You briefly wonder what led Iiri to leave her homeland. Maybe because it ♥♥♥♥ sucked.

As for you - born in Albern, a bit further from Darson than Elmont, but just a train ride away. Lots of farmland over there, a little too country for your liking. After finishing up schooling in Darson, you managed to scrap together enough funds to get a place in Elmont, where it's pretty cheap, if a bit unexciting.

Iirii exits her bedroom, wearing a long sleeved white-button down shirt that hides her skeletal arms, with an unbuttoned dark blue jacket overtop, and casual grey pants. Almost has an old colonial look.

She slings a backpack over her shoulder and gives you a smile.

Iiri: "Ready to go."

You consider swearing to yourself that you will never fall for a bat.

Iiri is kinda cute though, cuddly at the very least. You'll have to think about it.

The two of you leave the house and walk towards the train station, passing houses and reaching the more "downtown" area of the town - small shops, eateries, the cheap bread store where everyone there knows your name.

Your chirop friend pulls out a pocket watch.

Iiri: "We still have an hour until noon. Grab something to eat?"

The two of you find a cafe that has inside as well as outside dining. Barely any people right now, since most people would be at work at this time.

A bit more expensive than your usual bread-ham-spinach meals, but you can manage. The two of you take a seat at one of the outdoor tables and a waiter walks over with two paper menus, handing each of you one.

Waiter: "Welcome, what can I get for you two?"

Looks like they have various sandwiches, soups, and salads. Salads are the cheapest, sandwiches most expensive.

Waiter: "That'll be the mushroom soup, very good.

And for you?"

Iiri: "A ham sandwich, no onions, and the garden salad please."

Waiter: "Alright, those'll be out in a jiffy."

The waiter leaves, quickly returning to place two glasses of water on the table, and then leaves again.

Iiri: "Find anything useful in the new books?"

A friend (Iiri) had told you that she heard rumours that some hikers came upon some fairly old ruins further west, a good day's journey one-way on rails and then legging it through some forest. Turned out to be true, and you were surprised to come upon intact books in the basement of one of the collapsed buildings. You already went over three of the books this morning, with the last, a diary, in your bag right now.
