Frederic waits.

Gram pulls out his pistol and fires on the slime, with the bullet flying through its body and ultimately doing little. It at least seems a bit upset, for a slime.
Green Slime takes 3 damage.

Karina: "Here Frederic! Smash it!"
Karina casts Energize on Frederic.

Frederic nods, then whacks the slime again, compressing it into another slime pancake. This time it quivers and stays mostly compressed. Looks like it's close to "dying".
Green Slime takes 8 damage.

The slime feebly tries again to jump at Frederic, this time hitting his leg and just bouncing off.
Frederic takes 0 damage.

Frederic: "At this point I almost feel bad for it."

Frederic stabs the slime with the blunt tip of his greatsword, and it finally loses cohesion, collapsing from a round blob into a formless pile of goo.
You help him bag the slime up, scooping the goo into a leather sack and tucking away the core for later.

Victory!

Frederic: "This isn't very effective."
Karina: "Yeah, they take too long to approach. We know what kind of fight they can put up now, we can probably handle the island itself."
Hm. Looking over at the island, it'll probably be groups of three or four slimes of that size at once, and some that are larger. But you'll also have room to maneuver, and Frederic wouldn't have to worry about smashing the boat.

"I'm noticing that a firearm may have been the wrong tool to bring in terms of raw damage... but if we're okay with losing some valuable cores, I could attempt to plug them with rounds from the boat. Aim a bit more carefully."

Frederic: "I think you'd run out of bullets before we get enough slimes. And we'd still need to go down there to collect them.
The cores are nice to have, but not make or break. Harder to get than the slime gel itself, but also much lower demand. Considering they're just slimes, I'd prefer the faster hunting from aiming for the cores.
Anyway, we're here to test our teamwork in a real fight. Not going to get much of that sitting up in the boat."

Hm. He makes a good point. And better against slimes than something really dangerous, like the monsters on that nearby beast island.

To the island!

Frederic heads back to the wheel, and guides the ship down towards the docks. While you lower, you reload your pistol and look at the island with Karina. Slimes everywhere, with a safe zone around a docking area. Looks like they generally travel or exist alone, instead of going around in groups, but the few adventurer parties you see are fighting groups of slimes. Maybe they group up and attack when there's a ruckus? Or they're just loud enough to attract multiple slimes. Thankfully, seems like there's a limit to how many approach at once. 6 slimes at most, fewer if any are big specimens. Probably so that dozens don't try to eat the same prey and end up with barely anything.
The ship docks and you help tie it up, then the three of you head over to the edge of the safe boundary. You idly wonder what kind of magic the small stone totems use to keep the slimes back.

Looking around, you see a few good options to fight.
There are 6 small slimes all clustered together, about the size of the one that landed on your ship.
There's 2 mid sized slimes, coming about up to mid-thigh, sitting with 2 small slimes.
And there's a big slime, as tall as you are but still shorter than Frederic, with 2 small slimes bouncing around it.

"How about we go for the big slime that has the two smaller ones with it? Fewer targets to concentrate on. Take out the smaller ones first, and then it's just one."

Karina: "If you think we can, I'm fine with it."

The three of you approach the giant slime, careful to avoid the other groups. Once you decide you're close enough, you pick up and throw a slime covered rock off the ground at the large slime. It bounces off harmlessly, but the slime definitely takes notice of your group. The entire mass ripples, as if making a noise, then starts lurching towards you as the two smaller slimes rush forward, much faster than the fat slime.

Battle!

Frederic is already in front, of course!

Gram analyzes the Large Blue Slime!
Similar to the green slime, but MUCH larger. The higher body mass gives it a lot more durability and strength. It's a bit less agile, but they weren't very agile to begin with. These big slimes like to jump and drop on prey with its full weight, and with this much weight it can be dangerous even to someone strong like Frederic.
Gram: "Frederic, watch out for its jump slam!"
Frederic: "Roger."

Karina casts Energize on Frederic! Energize is refreshed!


Frederic uses Heavy Slash on one of the green slimes.
The slime doesn't seem to have noticed that it has his attention, and the blade hits it dead on! In fact, it hits the core directly!
Slime takes 330 damage!
The slime, with its cohesion disrupted by having its core struck, takes the considerable force of Frederic's strike with no slime defenses! It explodes into a chunky green spray that litters the area.
Karina is a bit grossed out.

The other small green slime is stunned into inaction!

The large blue slime however, quivers energetically. You're... not sure what that means.
Suddenly, the blue slime begins emitting a deep thrum. From the way your stomach drops out, you can guess what that means. It's pissed. The slime flexes, squishing down low to the ground, then launches upwards towards your knight.
The Large Blue Slime uses Flying Press on Frederic!

Frederic brings up his sword to block the mass of the slime, but it still slams into him pretty hard, knocking him down to one knee. The slime then surges backwards, still quivering angrily.
Frederic takes 35 damage!

Frederic: "That hurt more than expected."

Frederic swings his huge sword at the equally huge slime, carving a deep cut into its body which almost immediately closes back up. Looks like with this big slime especially, straightforward physical attacks won't work. That other green slime got annihilated by just one hit to its core, maybe that's what you need here too.

You fire a shot into the remaining green slime, but being a slime, the shot doesn't do much. Judging from the bulk of the blue slime, it's doubtful your current gun could even reach the core. The green slime, on the other hand... With a well aimed shot, you could probably eliminate it.
Green Slime takes 2 damage!

Karina casts Basic Heal on Frederic!
Karina, with almost practiced ease, casts her only heal on Frederic. It doesn't fix all his wounds, but the familiar sensation of healing magic does repair some of the damage the slime caused.
Frederic regains 17 HP!

The green slime, having now been attacked, strikes back at you!
Green Slime attacks Gram! Green Slime uses Acid Body!
It hisses and bubbles as it leaps at you, but thanks to your leather armor and some quick thinking in swatting it off, the slime didn't manage to do any damage. You're starting to feel like these green slimes aren't much more than a distraction for the bigger, actually dangerous ones.
Gram takes no damage!

The blue slime, still angry, attacks Frederic again, this time lurching towards him in a wave instead of leaping into the air.
Large Blue Slime attacks Frederic!
However, without the advantage of the air attack, Frederic easily blocks its charge, using his sword as a barrier and shoving it back. The slime continues to vibrate, shifting to larger, deeper oscillations.
Frederic takes no damage!

Another swing, another deep cut in the blue slime that closes again immediately. This is going to be slow going. Maybe if you hit it really hard...

Now, with your boosted strength, you use Rapid Fire on the slime! To... pistol whip it.
This is probably the dumbest idea you've had all week.
The first hit, unsurprisingly, does little. The slime is a bit deformed from the smack, but overall doesn't react much.
The second hit does a lot more. The dent from the first hit apparently was pretty close to the core, and your second blow pierces a thin layer of slime and collides directly with the slime's core, cracking it cleanly in two.
The slime immediately stops all movement, sitting still as a green, slightly sagging orb.
Green Slime takes 3 damage!
Green Slime takes 82 damage!
Green Slime is slain!

Gram: "IT WORKED!"
Frederic: "I'd say that was the stupidest idea I've seen all week, but if it works it isn't stupid. Now help me with the big one!"

The "big one" is very unhappy to see its other green slime buddy slain. This time, it launches itself at Gram, surging angrily across the ground.
Large Blue Slime attacks Gram!
It knocks you back, but thankfully it wasn't as powerful as its opening strike on Frederic. That would've been bad.
Gram takes 10 damage!

The blue slime backs up, then continues its oscillations. You notice that it seems to be... bubbling a bit? Wait, isn't that...
Gram: "It's raising its acidity! Be careful, the next attack could be REALLY dangerous!"
