Frederic: "I hit things with my sword.
Since I have one arm and a gigantic frame, I can't really rely on agility or a shield to keep me safe. So I have to wipe out the enemy before they can hurt me. Or at least that's how I used to fight. Rethought a lot of that when I got my current position. You've seen my current sword."

You mean the giant metal plate with a handle that he calls a sword?
Frederic: "Yes, that. It's as big as I can still comfortably swing. My fighting style has switched from attacking all out and eliminating immediately, to focusing on defense and attacking when I see an opportunity. That sword is as much of a weapon as it is a shield. I've put a lot of practice into using large blades like it as shields to deflect attacks or stop them entirely."
Karina: "And I can hide behind it! We practiced that a lot, having me take cover behind it when there's something dangerous."
Frederic: "Mm. Though if we have to do that, something's gone wrong. Anything big enough to need to use that particular strategy, we shouldn't be fighting in the first place. Anything smaller and I can handle that with just pulling their attention and deflecting their blows."

Karina: "And I'm a healer! So, I stay on the back lines and support Frederic! I have some support light magic too, so I can cast buffs on Frederic! Or, um, everyone now cause we're a team! I don't know much attack magic though. Or, um, any. My teacher would barely even let me learn any debuffs, let alone attack magic. But that's okay, I don't like attacking things much anyway."

"And I shoot things.

" I'm also trained in survivalism, and a bit of healing magic.

VIOLATION OF GUN SAFETY - NEVER POINT AT ANYTHING YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

> Do not gun twirl because that is BAD.

"What was your teacher like? If they knew you planned on being an adventurer, seems a bit odd to keep you from learning offensive magic."

"What was your teacher like? If they knew you planned on being an adventurer, seems a bit odd to keep you from learning offensive magic."

You resist the urge to show off your gunplay, and instead ask about Karina's teacher.
Karina: "Weeeelll... It wasn't really training to be an adventurer... Was more of, like, learning healing magic to be a healer. Wanting to be an adventurer is a newer thing.
But my teacher is very nice! Very patient too, which is good because it took me a while to, er."

She halts for a moment, looking as if she's made a mistake.
Karina: "...Learn how to use magic. It, um, took a while to get the hang of it. But I'm much better now, it was just the initial bump! And he knows a lot of magic too! I bet if I'd asked he would've taught me more battle-useful magic."

"What specific magic techniques do you know? Any variance among your heals? Types of buffs?"

Karina: "Well, right now I know Basic forms of Heal, Cure, and Restore. Plus a strength booster spell in Healing magic, and one in Light that makes your armor and weapons shine to blind anything attacking you."
Heal, Cure, and Restore, you learned those three at the academy too. The most central healing magics. Heal is straight up a heal, it restores the target's health and repairs wounds. Cure can cure toxins and poisons of all kinds, though stronger stuff will need multiple casts, or higher tier curing spells. Restore can repair the body of statuses that aren't straight up injuries or wounds, like paralysis, dizziness, blindness, that sort of thing.

You don't know any buffs yourself, and you should probably think before you start branching into an element. That's a decision that can't be easily taken back. But the strength boost sounds useful, and since it's Healing based it should be fine to pick up.

"Hm, a strength booster.

Say, how good are you at, uh, teaching?"

Karina: "I've never tried? Oh, do you mean magic? Well, you said you already know healing magic, so that's a good start... I could try! Since it's basic, and you're already a user of healing magic, I don't think it'll be too hard for you to memorize the spell."

"Master?"

Karina blushes a bit and giggles.
Karina: "Certainly my pupil! Though I myself still have much to learn! We can learn togeth- Fred, stop that!"
You turn around to look at Frederic and just barely see him snap his view away from you and back to stare straight ahead at the sky, as if he'd been watching where the ship was going the entire time.
