"VIP escort screams 'we're going to be attacked by assassins or people otherwise skilld at killing other people', which I'm not particularly trained to handle.

With how much trouble we had with the birds on the way here while having an advantageous defensive position and sufficient warning ahead of the attack, I think I want to avoid the biologist escort and their monster bird research.

Caravan escort might be the safest monster-wise, but the chance of bandits, people specifically geared to fight other people, doesn't sound appealing...

Not really a fan of any of these at the moment. We're injured, under-equipped, and dealing with a lot of unknown variables."

Leon: "I am fine with no more birds right now."
Frederic: "From my own experiences with Karina, the VIP probably has a personal guard or two, and just want some local knowledge and additional hands. Depending on who the VIP in question is, it could be legitimate threats, or could just be a puffed up minor noble who likes to hire guards to feel fancy. Lords know there's plenty of those around.
I'm leaning towards the latter, considering they put that snooty 'unreputable need not apply' instead of specifying experienced adventurers."

Karina: "The logging survey doesn't sound too bad. Frederic could wrestle any bears, and the squirrels are monsters instead of beasts so they couldn't bite your fingers off. I think I've heard of them, they mostly use their magic for jumping around and knocking predators around."

"Hrm. Logging survey or VIP escort, then.

I think if fighting occurs, we'd be best at dealing with it in the logging survey, least prepared in the VIP escort. Logging survey seems like the best choice out of these.

Any of you have a preference?"

Frederic: "Survey. I know how to deal with bears and small monsters."
Leon: "VIP, but I'm fine with either."
Karina: "Survey!"

You grab the posting for the survey and take it over to the guild's clerk, who takes the sheet in one hand while scribbling down info with the other, and still manages to speak to you.
Clerk: "Very good, very good. We will contact the requester and let them know a party has accepted their job, and they'll meet you at the decided spot tomorrow. Your guild card?"

You hand over your beloved card, and he gives it a rapid once over while writing more things down. A few seconds later, and he hands back your card along with a small sheet of note paper.
Clerk: "There you are, that's the details for the requester's meeting spot."
8AM, south gate, out front of Braeburn Stables.

Clerk: "Will that be all?"

Clerk: "Then clear skies to you, Adventurers."

The four of you then walk out of the guild, and you look around for a moment before spotting a clock tower back towards the docks.
It's about... 2 in the afternoon. Still plenty of day left.
Leon: "So, we should gear up. Spells first?"

"Might help to get you some armor first. How much money do we have?"

Frederic: "All pooled? Enough for a spell or two or some basic armor, just a leather cuirass and maybe some guards. Not a lot."
Leon: "I'd feel a lot safer with a barrier to be honest. I'm confident in my spellcasting, more than some leather. Plus we could share the spell."

Frederic: "Hmm. A spell shop, if I remember correctly, that'll be... yes, right there."
He points about 3 buildings down the road, and what do you know, that is in fact a spell shop.
Leon: "Huh. What are the chances."
Frederic: "I think they clustered all the adventurer related stuff together, since Gunan is mostly a port city.

Hm. I don't think I really need to be there for this. I'll go get a room at the place we stayed before, Karina. You remember where that was?"

Karina: "Yup!"

Frederic gives her a long stare.
Karina: "Still yup!"
Frederic: "Alright."
He then heads off on his own, presumably to the inn. The three of you head into the magic shop.

It's, surprisingly plain. A small but comfortable central area, a couple of plush chairs set around a small wooden tea table, and the a counter directly facing the door. Behind the counter is a, fairly portly man. He's probably not an adventurer with that much heft on him.
Man: "Welcome, welcome~
I assume you've come to broaden your magical knowledge? Expand your mastery of the arcane? Acquire a new page in your personal grimoooire~?"

Man: "Ahh, a classic! Alas, my manners. I am Enrique! Finest mage in Gunan! At your humble service~"
Humble, huh.

Enrique: "Mmm... if I had to guess then, you are, beginner adventurers?"
Karina: "Yes! How did you know?"
Enrique: "A great many have come through Gunan, most on the way to more exciting lands! And of course, I have my own share of experiences~
Now... Your first barrier eh? A touch of defensive magic for the spellcaster on the go~. I know just the trick for that, simple simple. Unburdened with excess elements or fanciful force effects, just halts anything attempting to pass through. Simple and sturdy."

While he talks, he flourishes his hand in the air and a small oval disk of pale gold, barely visible light appears before it. He gives it a rap with the knuckles on his free hand, and it bounces off as if it were solid, with surprisingly little sound.
Enrique: "Adjustable size, can be underpowered with mana, though not overfilled. Moveable, though drains it a bit to do so.
To your liking?"

"Does it burn mana on deflection, while it's being maintained, or bit of both?"

Enrique: "Only on deflection, though it will deflect even the slightest breeze, so it functionally is a bit of maintenance cost as well."
