Of course, the legal process for putting someone to death is often held up in so much bull♥♥♥♥ that it costs more than just putting them in jail for life.
Additionally, many murders/crimes of violence are made either under the influence or during heightened emotional states (eg being really really pissed off) when a person isn't thinking about consequences, their actions, or really anything besides stabbing a ♥♥♥♥. An otherwise perfectly healthy, normal, and well adjusted person can be put away for life or put to death because of a few extremely regrettable seconds.
Jussayin.

Of course in cases like the crazy ass guy who shot up the theater during the Dark Knight premier, he clearly wasn't caught up in any heat of the moment, and should face the full fury of the judicial system.

Legal processes introduce so much bull♥♥♥♥. Sigh.

But yeah, I wasn't saying everyone who murders should be put to death. I just didn't want to go into that topic.

But you summed it up fairly well.
I agree with these posts as well.

I can sympathize with your opinion there Asklar, but ugh. Some people just don't deserve to live after what they've done.
For some murderers, if they committed a horrible, well known crime, then society wouldn't accept them back even if they did rehabilitate. People would recognize them as the "Tank top Killer" or whatever. Businesses wouldn't hire them.
It's pretty bad.

With the entire society not accepting them, it's like they are "living dead". And I don't think that people can decide if another one can live. It's like murdering but with a different reason. What's the difference? That one really deserved to die? And who can tell that? What's the point on playing God?

Just a life sentence, and having them do forced labors and living with the most basic things would be enough.

Like Rodion Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment, they should be sent to Siberia and work, though probably none or a few of them would be there wanting to redeem their acts.

Ok. Say I was the guy who killed 30 people at the DKR premiere.
Say I am sentenced to life.
I will live the rest of my days doing hard labor, eating dreadful food, being abused and tormented by my cellmates, and having nothing to do in the ways of entertainment.

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU WANT THIS RATHER THAN DEATH? ITS LIKE A LIMBO THAT ENDS IN 50 YEARS!

Because people are afraid of death.
Give him 10 years, and rather than realizing this sucks and wanting a way out, he'll have grown used to it and accepted it.
And besides that, nobody actually has the right to take their own life. So he can't get out of it.

Suicide is punished with death.
...

But seriously, I agree with that last oversized question Miggles said.
At times, death is too good for them. That's why (I suppose) some murderers suicide after killing.

Murder suicide is a very common scenario.

If they want to die, that's a difficult question.

Then the death penalty is no longer a preventative measure, but technically keeps future victims safe from further violence, and they don't eat up resources. (Let's ignore bureaucrazy here for a second.)

If it's a particularly gruesome and horrible crime, and the victim wants to die, perhaps they should be allowed to live with their guilt. Then again, that might encourage more gruesome crimes for those who want to murder and don't want to die.

If they want to die, and they kill somebody because they want to bring someone down with them, then they're probably psychotic anyway. Not much you can do about that.

I'm from Canada. We're a peaceloving folk but we're also the guys who strolled down south and jacked up Washington, D.C. because we felt like it.

Castration would be a pretty good punishment for pedophiles and the punishment suitable for murderers is pretty self explanatory.

Violent crimes should be washed away with a mixture of random beatings and forced heavy labor. Because having a violent rapist get some 10 odd years and getting out in five for good behavior really isn't fair.

The lightest punishment should be light labor i.e. doing the jobs that we pay fortunes for regular people to do, like cleaning the sewers, farming (at least in a sufficient amount to feed the prison population (and yes, my country used to do this until about forty years ago)), cleaning the streets and so on. A bit like how the Nazis did to the jews, but this time with the real scum, not some made up common enemy.

Let's be fair. The system doesn't work and never will, no matter how much money is thrown at the prisons, or how many rehabilitation programs are introduced, so why bother.

And like how I previously stated prison really isn't supposed to be a good place, it's supposed to be a place that instills fear on possible criminals, thus keeping the law in a passive manner.
