"Apparently. The entire city went absolutely mad. Roving bands of people, dragging people into the street and killing each other.
It started after a stranger in heavy clothes arrived in town.
Does that sound like anything you've heard of?"

She suddenly stops walking, and you stop as well. Her expression seems half frozen in a smile, half shock.

Setting her share of the cargo down, she steps closer to you and gently pokes you in the arm.

A strange tingle pulses through your body, like a random shiver that's over in an instant.

Picking the beach items up again, Aldente continues walking on, and you do as well.

Aldente: "Yes."

Her voice is no longer cheery or excited, but grim.

Aldente: "I only have a guess, but it seems too close to be a coincidence.

A strain of schal that should be extinct, though I suppose my kind should be extinct, too.

Most schals are harmless scavengers, unable to harm you unless if you manage to strangle yourself on their threads. When I was young, there was a kind that could break through a person's magic defenses and hijack their spirit and body. It's where the myths of schals being parasites come from - in reality, they can only puppet bodies that have already died.

Except the one my kind exterminated, and it looks like we might not have finished the job."

"Yessssss I knew it

Ahem. I wouldn't call most schals harmless, but I see what you mean. Another mindjacking core beast would be, very problematic to deal with.

For all we know, it's still there, at least the wandering people seem to indicate as much.

What about the missing fabric? Why would the schal take it, when it can make as much HM tape as it wants?"

"Seems core beasts have a habit of at least one surviving slipping away undetected...

Sounds like it set up a breeding grounds. Though, the people just wandering around aimlessly now, why would the schals do that when they could be spreading out to new areas, or finding somewhere less dangerous?
And, why aren't the corruption eaters snacking on them like spaghetti?"

Aldente: "The schals could be locked in to the area due to the corruption eaters, and the corruption eaters simply wait around waiting for one to attempt to leave.

It's a good thing those corruption eaters are there - who knows how far this could have spread without them."

The two of you reach Bezel's apartment and load the beach items on to a cart.

Aldente: "Looks like you're all set from here! I have some new business to attend to, so I'll be taking my leave now."

If your business involves these schals, keep me in the loop. My team's planning on going back soon."

She rolls her eyes playfully.

"It's not like criminals are my preferred food. Running a restaurant lets me tailor my meals precisely to my taste, which you may be happy to know does not include people.

I may be contacting you again in the near future, so until then, goodbye!"

All of the beach items are loaded off the cart and into Bezel's apartment. A quick check of the rooms confirms she isn't home you.

Time to get cooking!

You begin cooking, a one-man-frenzy of activity in the kitchen.

Part-way through, you hear the front door open. Turning around, you see Bezel groggily walking in.

Heading towards you, she stops when her body is lightly pressing against your side, head resting on your shoulder.

Bezel: "Dinner smells nice."

"Can you set the table?"

Bezel: "Mm."

After a second of lingering, Bezel goes to the cabinets, opening one after the other until she locates the plates, and then sets a pair on the table. She has similar issues with utensils.

Now that you think about it, she does normally just poof up HM dinnerware as needed.

Dinner is finally complete, and you spend the last minute placing all of the food into serving plates and setting them on the dinner table.

Bezel appears to be passed out on the couch, still in her work clothes.

She slowly stirs awake, mumbling something before letting you help her to the table.

The two of you begin eating, with Bezel seeming to be slightly more awake after her nap.

Bezel: "How was your day?"
