I got to thinking, and since we went 32 bit, we can now do some transparency effects. What if we put a dark overlay over a map and made it night time? Even cooler: What if the glow effects could act as flashlights?
Lighting ftw.

the trouble with that is having an overlay, would make everything darker, including the glow effects, you'd have to set the depth/layer crap for the overlay, to be over EVERYTHING, except glow effects, and the glow effects would need to have another image added per size, for just white, to remove the 'night'
and if you did that, you'd need parts of the map as light sources such as lamps, that would be terrain, and you cant have interactive terrain sadly, unless you made it an actor, owned by noone, that cant have items or move, which would be made to have an absurdly high tollerance for damage. but in long games it would still be able to be destroyed. that and if the ground around it was destroyed.... yeah....
nightfight, while a cool idea, would be a pain, and would require a major overhaul of the engine AGAIN, including the glow effects.

No, this actually sounds like an awesome idea.

I shall work on something for making maps dark. I hope it works. Vagoo.
Also, since you seem fairly new, how would you know unless you've tried?

It could work but it would have to be a total conversion.

Miles:
Why would you need an actor?

You could have a pinned ACRocket with a null sprite that emits the glow particle.

It'd lag, but it'd work.

Wait, why wouldn't we be able to destroy it? I don't see why we can't or shouldn't. I honestly don't think shooting a lamp won't break it. Just make it on the same team as the AI. Human players are smart enough to realize it's a lamp and not shoot it, and AI players don't usually shoot their clones... On purpose.

well I was also wondering if anyone else was still paying attention to it, I kinda want this map to happen, but since I'm with SRC.....

Maps aren't really my thing anyway.
