Completely real, and readily available for sale for about two million dollars. More if you want extras. Check out the website if you have a few spare million dollars sitting around.
Picture from some Japanese convention.

Eh, I'm not impressed. Atleast, not until they make that into a real military weapon that is not easily thwarted by a pit in the road.

Like something that has eight wheel drive? oh, wait.
The whole concept of making machines human shaped is pretty arbitrary. The likelihood is that our tanks will always be more durable than something shaped like that. Cheaper too.
That said, I'd love one for personal use.

What about that power suit that guy in Alaska made a few years back? That seemed pretty practical, it just used hydraulics to amplify all of your motions.

Powerloaders aren't really practical when it comes to war.

Indeed. Walking units of any kind other than infantry lack the strategic mobility to make them useful in a large scale conflict. They are just too slow to get to the front to make a difference. Not only that, but you've basically exposed the under belly of your vehicle, which is also a dead zone of fire unless you have a turret mounted on the bottom or something. I'll assume the legs function though hydraulics of some kind. In the event of damage to one of those hydraulics, you'll have a nightmare with field repair, having to patch the cylinder and refill it with gas during a battle.
And don't even get me started on giant robots. Guh. Especially the anime kind covered in heavy ornamentation, or those where the pilot is located in a head with eyes, or those where the mech uses guns controlled by hands. Or those with glass cockpits.

The cognitive dissonance between your avatar and post. It is too powerful.

The Mechwarrior games make much more since than anime IMO.

Oh, the avatar? It's just a funny scene from Megas XLR where they eject the fists to pop out bigger fists. Good scene. That show was always way over the top
He's thinking of blowing up the DMV since the mech got towed away due to being in a no parking zone.
Same episode where Coop pulls the S-Force out of the fire. The S-Force are basically the Power Rangers.
And a general compilation of scenes.
Also, this.

Indeed they do. Not only are the mech's moved by air travel between battles, they have clear determined roles and seem relatively easy to produce to be available in a large quantity. Most mech warrior mechs have exposed cockpits, too.

Actually, depending where you are in the ♥♥♥♥ of a canon plotline and whoever is the writer right now, mechs are either centuries-old relics that are handed down through a family, or - as you say - readily available and seemingly easy to produce in respectable quantities.
Or at least enough that House Steiner's concept of 'recon' involves airdropping two or three Lances of Atlases on the target.

Yeah. I personally prefer the MW4 perspective on the mech cheapness. You could probably afford a cheap light mech if you save your money up.
Wait a second. How much does, say, a Flea cost? Subtract the cost of the weapons from that, and we can see how much a empty mech would cost.
