you can use scripts to get that effect and i believe 3d max has that function hidden away in the depths of the modifiers channel.

After doing this for three years I have to say that is not as easy as just a script or a feature. It also looks like his cloth has thickness, which is usually a real ♥♥♥♥♥.

Either you're lying about having never touched Blender before, or those are some DAMN good tutorials. That's not at all stuff I'd expect a beginner to be able to make, I'm impressed.

Saw a tutorial for wine glasses, but didn't watch it, and just made it up as I went along this time

Quick edit for better handle decoration.
EDIT: Now with Blaze and Shine. Not happy with Blaze yet, the pattern on the shaft is ♥♥♥♥ and the shading looks bad on the blade. But, it's late and I'm tired, so I attack it again tomorrow. Quick edit for better handle decoration.
